F.A.Q. for speaker applicants

Scope & subjects

The event will focus on translation: skills, specialisations, technical background, platforms, etc.

BP stands for Business and Practice

When submitting a proposal, bear in mind that attendees prefer presentations where they can learn something practical.   This could be a niche specialisation, a unique skill, tips on finding clients in a certain area, the impact of AI in a specific field, various tools and resources, and much more. Every year we also have a few sessions on soft skills.

Online only (12-15 April)

At BP27, all sessions and workshops will take place online, between 12 and 15 April.  (We’ll meet in person two weeks later in Prague.)

This format allows for more speakers to present, and not only in English — other languages are also welcome.

Workshops

A workshop may be 120 or 150 minutes long.  (Technically, even longer ones are possible. Explain why you need longer time on the application form.)

A workshop may be presented by one or two speakers.

Sessions

Online sessions may be 25′ or 50′ long, including time for Q&A.

Walking tours / Day trips

The idea for this day is that we’ll split into groups of 15-25 people (e.g. based on specialization, or othewise), and a local colleague will show the group around Prague (or lead a day trip).

Design a route that avoids heavily touristed areas, guide your group around, and have some lunch along the way.

The application and selection process

You may submit up to three applications, using the application form here.  Please fill in the form for each application.

Applications in languages other than English are welcome.  Please fill in the entire form in the language of your proposed presentation.

As usual at BP Translation Conferences, the potential audience will have a say in the selection process.  Usually, 80-90% of all proposals are included in a survey, where people can vote if they would like to see each presentation in the programme.

For larger events, we usually have two rounds of voting, in which case the first round is anonymous, i.e. only the titles and short abstracts are shown, but not the speakers’ names.   In this case, some 30-40% of the proposed subjects will make it to a shortlist, and attendees can vote again, this time seeing the names as well.

First-time speaker?

Speaking at an online event is a great way to gain confidence and to get acknowledged as an expert in an area.

After presenting at an online event, you may also successfully apply as a speaker at in-person events such as our annual BP Translation Conferences. In fact, quite a few regular conference speakers started off at BP.

Also, we provide a practial guide to our speakers, and offer online consultation in the months leading up to the event.

If you have a compelling subject or a niche area you ar passionate about, you already have great foundations.  Do apply as a speaker, perhaps with even 2 proposals.  After a first round of selection, we’ll conduct Zoom calls with potential speakers, and help you with putting together your presentation.

Compensation

Most likely compensation plan:

Workshops:  250€ against an invoice + free gala dinner in Prague (or 60€ as store credit)

50′ session:  150€ against an invoice + free gala dinner in Prague (or 60€ as store credit)

25′ session:  40€ store credit + free gala dinner in Prague  (or 60€ as store credit)

Tour guides: 80€ as store credit

BP27 timeline

12-15 April :: Online

The actual conference takes place online, with workshops and shorter presentations.

Because of the online format, we can be flexible in both the scope and the languages.

How do I apply as a speaker?

Please submit up to 3 different proposals in the application form below.

As usual, presentations and workshops need offer practical advice, with real-life examples, and useful takeways that attendees can implement in their own freelance translation business.

Why did you have to cancel the real thing?

Dwindling attendee numbers in the past couple of years make it extremely difficult to plan ahead.   Organizing a conference requires a huge financial commitment upfront, usually 8-12 months in advance.  Simply put, I cannot be certain that 180 people will show up — the number of attendees for which I was supposed to sign a contract.

By shifting the sessions online, I don’t have to rent the meeting rooms and spend on hotel catering.   Online events are not ideal, but they are definitely much cheaper to run.

Certificates

You will receive a certificate for attending the event, acknowledging the number of actual hours you participate.

Recordings

Recordings of the online sessions and workshops remain available until 30 September 2027.

How do I register?

You need to buy a ticket to the online event below.

Your purchase will cover payments for the speakers and the operational costs of running BP Translation Conferences.

26-28 April 2027 :: Prague

We’ll have 2-3 days of fringe events, all day long, to hang out with like-minded professionals in Beautiful Prague.

Join dinners in the evenings, with several walking tours, day trips, and other activities in smaller groups during the day.

So, is this a conference or not?

For many people (perhaps the majority), the quintessential BP conference experience has always been hanging out with fellow translators from around Europe and beyond.

Now you’ll have much more time to do just that.  We’ll have walking tours and day trips in small groups during the day, and the entire crowd will meet for dinners during the evenings.

How much will this cost me?

The good news is now the event is much more affordable, since you won’t need an an actual conference ticket (since we won’t have to spend on conference room rental and hotel catering).

You’ll need to spend on flight/train tickets to get to Prague, and you’ll spend on a room to stay (sharing a room is a good way to save money).  Soon, we’ll publish tips on where to find reasonably priced accommodation.

Set aside some funds for eating out, entrance tickets, and public transportation.  So, essentially, think of the experience as a school reunion (which it will be, in more ways than one).

Dinner on Monday, 26 April

Most probably we’ll be at Manifesto, a large food court in Prague 5.

The idea is that we as a group will have an independent area for ourselves, with tables and benches.   We’ll start off with a welcome drink and some bites (for which I’ll collect some funds in advance), then you pay on the spot for your own consumption at any of the dozens of food trucks.

(You order your food, pay for it, then you eat it in our secluded area.)

Manifesto is easy to reach by public transport (metro and tram).  The place is open air, but there’s also a roof.

Dinner on Tuesday, 27 April

Our gala dinner will take place at Mánes, a beautiful venue near the famous ‘dancing house’, two bridges south of Charles Bridge.  Tram stop very close.

We’ll have set menus and drinks, payable well in advance.  More info soon.

Other days

You can easily spend 3-4 days in Prague and much more if you’d like to explore the country.

The days with the highest number of BP folks around are likely to be 26-28 April.  (I’ll try to find a dinner venue for a large group for 28 April as well.)

Where to stay?

Soon, we’ll publish some suggestions on where to stay.

It’s always fun to share breakfast with fellow attendees.   Stay tuned, more info soon (still in October).

How do I register?

Technically speaking, the event in Prague will be a private gathering of friends.  The organizer (Csaba) will collect funds for the dinners in advance on his private account.

You’re expected to buy a ticket to the online event here on this page (registration opens soon).

About BP Translation Conferences

BP Translation Conferences started out in 2013 when freelance translator Csaba Bán decided to organize an internation conference for fellow freelance translators.  Our first event, BP14, took place in his home town Budapest.

The conference was a success, and it grew into a series of annual events, each year in a different country in Europe.

From the very start, ‘BP’ stood for ‘Business & Practice’, the two broad areas that define the scope of our events.

Since 2020, we started to organize online events as well.  By now, at over 20 events (online and off combined), we’ve had freelance translators from well over 70 countries around the world.

BP Translation Conferences remain independent, not associated with translators’ association, any other professional association, CAT tool vendor, or government body.

We are determined to create events for freelance translators to share their expertise grow their professional network… and have fun while doing it.
