Scope & subjects
The event will focus on translation: skills, specialisations, technical background, platforms, etc.
BP stands for Business and Practice
When submitting a proposal, bear in mind that attendees prefer presentations where they can learn something practical. This could be a niche specialisation, a unique skill, tips on finding clients in a certain area, the impact of AI in a specific field, various tools and resources, and much more. Every year we also have a few sessions on soft skills.
Workshops (3 May)
We’ll have up to six workshops on Monday, 3 May, each with a duration of 2 and half hours.
A workshop may be presented by a single person, or by up to 3 people. In this latter case, this group of presenters may host a mini track for a specialization with several shorter topics, while keeping the workshop format with interactive exercises.
Sessions (4 May)
We’ll have 10+1 sessions on Tuesday, 4 May.
The duration of each session will be 45 minutes, ideally with 30-35 minutes of actual presentation, and 10-15 minutes of Q&A.
Alternatively, you may host an interactive session (e.g. a ’round table’) with more audience involvement — write down your idea in your application.
Walking tours (5 May)
The idea for this day is that we’ll split into groups of 15-25 people (e.g. based on specialization, or othewise), and a local colleague will show the group around Prague.
Design a route that avoids heavily touristed areas, guide your group around, and have some lunch along the way.
We’ll all meet later in the day at the same spot.
Online only (17-21 May)
All sessions from Prague will be repeated online two weeks later (on Zoom).
There’s place for a few more additional sessions/workshops.
(If you can’t make it Prague, but would like to earn store credits for a future event.)
The application and selection process
You may submit up to three applications, using the application form here. Please fill in the form for each application.
Applications in languages other than English are welcome. Please fill in the entire form in the language of your proposed presentation.
As usual at BP Translation Conferences, the potential audience will have a say in the selection process. Usually, 80-90% of all proposals are included in a survey, where people can vote if they would like to see each presentation in the programme.
For larger events, we usually have two rounds of voting, in which case the first round is anonymous, i.e. only the titles and short abstracts are shown, but not the speakers’ names. In this case, some 30-40% of the proposed subjects will make it to a shortlist, and attendees can vote again, this time seeing the names as well.
First-time speaker?
Speaking at an online event is a great way to gain confidence and to get acknowledged as an expert in an area.
After presenting at an online event, you may also successfully apply as a speaker at in-person events such as our annual BP Translation Conferences. In fact, quite a few regular conference speakers started off at BP.
Also, we provide a practial guide to our speakers, and offer online consultation in the months leading up to the event.
Compensation
All speakers will attend the event for free. If all goes well (i.e. sufficient number of tickets are sold), the dinners are also included.
You may also attend one workshop for free. (If sufficient number of tickets are sold, you may attend 3 workshops.)
Workshop speakers will probably get more, but now it’s too early tell how much more. (If sufficient number of tickets are sold, probably 200€ against an invoice, or 250€ discount off another BP event.)

How to reach the hotel
From the airport:
Thee are various ways of reaching the hotel from the airport by public transpot, each involving a change.
The fastest one is bus 100 to Zličín, then metro C to Anděl, then 5 minutes walk. (48 minutes in total.)
Other options are bus 59 to Divoká Šárka, then tram 20 to Anděl, or bus 191 to Klamovka, then tram 7 or 9 to Anděl. (55 minutes in total.)
From the main train station:
(a) Walk out of the building, turn right and walk 30 meters through the park. Take tram 5 or 9 to Anděl.
(b) Take metro B to I. P. Pavlová, then take tram 4, 10, or 16 to Anděl.
Both routes take about 23-25 minutes.
From the main bus station (Florenc):
Take metro C to Anděl (25 minutes, incl. walking).
The easiest way to buy transport tickets is through the PID app.
A lively neighbourhood
The area around Anděl (‘angel’) metro station is one of the liveliest neighbourhoods in all of Prague, with plenty of restaurants, cafés, and bars.
It’s also a very good base to explore Prague:
By metro: Get off at Můstek to reach Wenceslas square, one of the grandest public spaces in Europe. Get off at Náměstí Republiky for the medieval Gunpowder Tower, and a short walk to the Old Town Square (also close from Můstek). Get off at Národní třída to see the revolving Kafka head monument. Get off at Florenc for the main bus terminal.
Tram 5 and 9 take you along a similar route as the metro, but you also get to see the National Theatre. Take these trams to reach the main railway station (Hlavní nádraží).
Trams 12/15/20 take you Malostranské náměstí (Lesser Town square), which is the closest tram stop for Charles Bridge, the castle, and Kampa island.
About BP Translation Conferences
BP Translation Conferences started out in 2013 when freelance translator Csaba Bán decided to organize an internation conference for fellow freelance translators. Our first event, BP14, took place in his home town Budapest.
The conference was a success, and it grew into a series of annual events, each year in a different country in Europe.
From the very start, ‘BP’ stood for ‘Business & Practice’, the two broad areas that define the scope of our events.
Since 2020, we started to organize online events as well. By now, at over 20 events (online and off combined), we’ve had freelance translators from well over 70 countries around the world.
BP Translation Conferences remain independent, not associated with translators’ association, any other professional association, CAT tool vendor, or government body.
We are determined to create events for freelance translators to share their expertise grow their professional network… and have fun while doing it.
