F.A.Q. for speaker applicants

 

 

Scope & subjects

 The event will focus on financial and legal translation — and there are some overlaps between these two areas. 

Other fields are also welcome, such as business, politics, international organisations.

When submitting a proposal, bear in mind that attendees prefer presentations where thez can learn something practical.   This could be a niche specialisation, a unique skill, tips on finding clients in a certain area, the impact of AI in a specific field, various tools and resources, and much more.

 

Session or workshop?

 

Online events offer flexibility in the duration of individual sessions and workshops.

However, for scheduling reasons, the programme will consist of several 1-hour blocks, with 50-minute sessions (followed by a 10-minute break before the next session starts).

In a typical 50′ session, the presentation itself will last 35 (maybe 40) minutes, followed by 15 (or 10) minutes of Q&A.

Some of the 1-hour blocks may be split into two shorter talks of 25 minutes each. In this case, the presentation ideally last for 18-20 minutes, leaving the remaining 7 or 5 minutes for Q&A.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, we have workshops of 110 or 160 minutes.  A 110′ workshop would have a 10′ break in the middle, while a 160′ workshop would consist of two blocks of 70′ each, with a 20′ break.

When you submit your application, please indicate your preferred duration. 

If your appplication is accepted, we may be asking you if you are OK with a shorter or longer duration than what you applied for.

 

 

The application and selection process

You may submit up to three applications, using the application form here.  Please fill in the form for each application.

Applications in languages other than English are welcome and encouraged.  Please fill in the entire form in the language of your proposed presentation.

As usual at BP Translation Conferences, the potential audience will have a say in the selection process.  Usually, 80-90% of all proposals are included in a survey, where people can vote if they would like to see each presentation in the programme.

For larger events, we usually have two rounds of voting, in which case the first round is anonymous, i.e. only the titles and short abstracts are shown, but not the speakers’ names.    In this case, some 30-40% of the proposed subjects will make it to a shortlist, and attendees can vote again, this time seeing the names as well.

First-time speaker?

Speaking at an online event is a great way to gain confidence and to get acknowledged as an expert in an area.

After presenting at an online event, you may also successfully apply as a speaker at in-person events such as our annual BP Translation Conferences. In fact, quite a few regular conference speakers started off at BP.

Also, we provide a practial guide to our speakers, and offer online consultation in the months leading up to the event.

 

Compensation

 25′ session:  90€ store credit

50′ session:  150€ store credit

110′ workshop:  150€ payout or 220€ store credit

160′ workshop: 200€ payout or 300€ store credit

Store credits will be added to your BPconf.com account, and you can use them on the Checkout page for any future BPconf event. Store credits count toward the net price of any event.

Payouts: against an invoice

In addition, each speaker may bring along one colleague (workshop speakers: 2 colleagues) who will receive a Premium ticket for the entire event for free. This offer is valid for colleagues who have not attended a BPconf event before.  You may bring along a mentee, a student, or a friend.

Registration / Tickets (Remote)

Ticket types

During the current pre-registration period, only ‘Premium’ tickets are available, covering all sessions and workshops, and giving you access to the recordings as well.

We may have different types of tickets later on.

 

Geographically differentiated pricing

For all our online events, we use geographically differentiated pricing, making it more affordable to attend for colleagues in lower income countries.

For example, people in Romania pay less than in Germany; people in Argentina pay less than in Spain; and so on.

Prices shown on this page are the highest ones.  The price payable in your country will be shown on the Checkout page.

Note: if the country based on your IP address does not match the country based on your billing address, you’ll receive an error message.

(For example, if your billing address is in France, but you’re currently on holiday in Morocco.)

For best results, buy your ticket in your home country — or send us a message with your billing address and the type of ticket you’d like to buy, and we’ll issue an invoice manually.

How do I register for the conference?

You will receive the necessary access information 3 weeks before the online edition, and you’ll also receive reminder emails.

Can I really attend for free?

You’ll be able to sign up for free access. This will cover a single track, with probably 3-4 sessions.

More details, including the actual tracks, will be available from July.

In the meantime, it’s a good idea to sign up to our mailing list.

VAT

Remote attenance at online events is considered a digital service, and is taxed as such.

If you’re from the EU, with a VAT number:

  • You’ll pay the net amount, following the reverse charge VAT mechanism

If you’re from the EU, without a VAT number:

  • You’ll pay your local VAT on top of the net price (e.g. 20% in France, 23% in Italy, etc.)

I you’re from Hungary:

  • you’ll need to pay Hungarian VAT

If you’re from outside the EU, and you purchase as a company:

  • You’ll pay only the net amount

If you’re from outside the EU, and you purchase as an individual:

  • you’ll need to pay Hungarian VAT

 

 

Invoicing

Remote tickets will be invoiced with our Hungarian VAT number. Remote attendance is considered a digital service.

If you are based in the EU and you have a VAT number, you will pay the net amount (reverse charge VAT).  If you are based in the EU and you don’t have a VAT number, you’ll need to pay your local VAT on top of the net price.

If you are outside the EU, you’ll pay the net price.

Deposit invoice vs Final invoice

You’ll first receive a ‘deposit invoice’ when you pay for your ticket. You can use this for accounting purposes.

Once the event is over, we need to issue a so-called ‘final invoice’: this will have a total 0€, and you probably won’t need it anyway, but we need to issue to comply with Hungharian regulations.

 

 

 

Where does my money go?

Revenue from remote ticket sales is used to cover our ongoing expenses of running BP Translation Conferences.

About BP Translation Conferences

BP Translation Conferences started out in 2013 when freelance translator Csaba Bán decided to organize an internation conference for fellow freelance translators.  Our first event, BP14, took place in his home town Budapest.

The conference was a success, and it grew into a series of annual events, each year in a different country in Europe.

From the very start, ‘BP’ stood for ‘Business & Practice’, the two broad areas that define the scope of our events.

Since 2020, we started to organize online events as well.  By now, at over 20 events (online and off combined), we’ve had freelance translators from well over 70 countries around the world.

BP Translation Conferences remain independent, not associated with translators’ association, any other professional association, CAT tool vendor, or government body.

We are determined to create events for freelance translators to share their expertise grow their professional network… and have fun while doing it.
