Walking tours in Seville

We’ll have guided walking tours to show you the best of Seville: Alcázar, Giralda, the cathedral, the old town, Plaza de España, and so on.

Probable times include Sunday afternoon (21 April), Monday morning / afternoon (22 April), and Thursday morning (25 April).

Each walking tour will last about 3.5 hours. We may have two or three different itineraries.

Flamenco & bar hopping (24 April)

We’ll have our own flamenco show, starting at 20:30 in the old town. Well, technically it’s open to the public, but if many of you buy your ticket early, chances are only BP24 attendees will be present.

Casa del Flamenco offers captivating performances in a traditional Andalusian building in the former Jewish quarter of the old town.

There are 80 seats, the show lasts one hour, and it costs 22€ per person.

Buy your ticket directly at the venue’s website: Casa del Flamenco.      Select Tickets, select the date (24 April), then select 20:30, then hit Next.

When this performance sells out, they will open the 22:00 slot as well.

Your conference organizers were fascinated by the show at this venue. Highly recommended.

There are several tapas bars within 150 meters, so you can eat and drink before and after the show.

Take bus 34 from the conference hotel to its downtown terminus, then walk about 15 minutes to reach Casa del Flamenco, or share a taxi with others.

The old town of Seville is one large maze of tapas bars, with a high concentration around this flamenco venue.

There will be no organized walking tours for this evening, but feel free to form groups and explore this fascinating town with your fellow conference attendees.

Day trip A :: Córdoba (25 April)

This is the day trip that will most likely take place, to Córdoba, the culturally thriving capital of Andalusia around the year 1000.

We’ll take a bus directly from the hotel around 8:30 on Thursday, 25 April. We’ll see the highlights of Córdoba, including the Mezquita (the former grand mosque, still retaining most of the original design), the Roman bridge, the Jewish quarter, the Alcázar, and so on.

The tour will include a lunch stop, and the bus will return to the hotel around 19:00.

Optionally, the bus may stop at Sevilla airport around 18:30, and the city centre around 18:50.

Day trip B :: Ronda & Setenil (25 April)

Based on an initial survey, this destination also seems to be popular.

The bus will leave around 8:30 from the hotel and return around 18:30

Ronda’s most recognizeable sight is its bridge, spanning a deep gorge that runs right thrugh this gem of a town. Other sights include the bullfight ring, the Arab baths, the old city gate, and more.

On the way back to Seville, we will stop at Setenil de Bodega, famous its unique street covered by an enormous cliff.

Time permitting, we may stop at one more Andalusian white town. 

Day trip C :: Caminito del Rey (26 April)

This famous walking path is definitely among the most spectacular ones in Europe.  At the most beautiful sections, you’ll walking on glass panels above a deep gorge, with a river flowing under your feet, 100 meters below.

The actual walking distance is about 8 kms, and requires 2.5 – 3 hours. Technically, it’s an easy walk, but it’s certainly not for anyone with a vertigo.  Comfortable walking shoes required. 

Leaving Seville (Hotel Silken) around 8:30, stopping in Osuna for a walk / café, then continue to the Caminito area. We’ll have time for a light lunch before walking to the trailhead.  We’ll enter at 14:00 and walk until about 16:30.  Returning back to Seville around 19:00.

Day trip D :: Cádiz & Jerez de la Frontera  (26 April)

We’ll have this organized day trip if there are enough people interested. 

Cádiz is probably oldest city in Europe, with a history dating back three millennia.  Sights include a cathedral, green parks, a produce market, and a sandy beach.

Jerez de la Frontera’s claim to fame is sherry, named after the town itself.  Sights include the usual alcázar (fortress) – cathedral – market combo, but the town’s charm makes up for the rest.  Besides sherry, locals are proud of their own version of flamenco, as well as their their horse-breeding tradition.

Both cities can also be visited easily on your own, with regular buses and trains from Seville.
