Getting to Utrecht

By plane

The nearest airport is Amsterdam’s Schiphol, which is very well connected by direct flight routes to all major airports around the world.

Here is a zoomable map of cities with direct flights to Amsterdam.

This Wikipedia article lists many additional cities as well, where direct flights will start or resume in the near future.

You can take a train directly from the airport to Utrecht, about 3 times an hour. The journey take about 25 minutes, and the conference hotel is a 3-minute walk from the train station.

Several low-cost routes fly to Eindhoven, from where it takes about an hour to reach Utrecht’s train station.

Eindhoven airport’s Wikipedia page lists all destinations served, and here’s a zoomable map.

Other airports that are within an easy train ride from Utrecht include Rotterdam, Maastricht, Brussels, Cologne, and Dortmund.

Our official airline:  KLM

Our official airline is KLM.  You can get attractive discounts, up to 15%, on a wide range of public fares on all AIR FRANCE, KLM and their code-shared flights worldwide.

You need to fly between 1 and 17 May 2023, from any airport served by KLM to Amsterdam (and return), using the code 39118AF.  (Or click here or on the logo to take you directly to the booking page.)

Please note that not all routes/dates are discounted. It’s worth checking back from time to time.

We do not get any commission from KLM.

By train

You can reach Utrecht easily and frequently by train within an hour from large parts of the Netherlands.

Cities within 3 hours include Brussels, Düsseldorf, Köln, Brugge.

Cities within 5 hours include Paris, Frankfurt/M, Hamburg, Berlin.

You can reach Utrecht within 7 hours from London, Nürnberg, Basel, Lyon.

The earlier you buy your ticket, the cheaper it is.

By bus

Although flying is definitely faster and in most cases also cheaper than land transport, from come cities a bus connection may be a better option.

Flixbus operates a number of long-distance routes to Utrecht, mostly from northern France, Belgium, and most of Germany. In addition to the dots on this map, there are direct buses also from Serbia.

The Flixbus terminal in Utrecht is close the main train station, and a max. 10-minute walk to the conference hotel.

Other bus companies may also operate long-distance buses from other cities.

Accommodation

Crowne Plaza / Hilton (conference venue)

Our conference hotel is Crowne Plaza Utrecht Central Station. Special rates will be available for BP23 attendees soon, please stay tuned for more info.

In the same building there’s also a Hilton, run by the same management,  offering rooms at a slightly lower rate than at Crowne Plaza.  In fact, some floors belong to CP, while some floors belong to Hilton.

The hotel is located in a modern shopping mall that connects the central train station with the old town, so it’s a few minutes walking distance from both.

You may find cheaper rates with different terms on the hotel’s website or on Booking.com, so it’s worth shopping around.

Other hotels / apartments

Utrecht has a wide range of hotels as well as holiday apartments.   If you can find 3, 4, or even more people staying together, renting a holiday apartment for your stay will turn out to be much cheaper than in the conference hotel.

Since Utrecht is very well connected by trains with many other cities, you may even stay elsewhere, and still get to the conference venue within 30 or so minutes.

Once the app becomes active in February, and we’ll have a forum where you can discuss room sharing.

Survival guide

Would you like to write this section?

We are looking for a local colleague with good writing skills to write this section.

You’ll need to research and write about public transport, taxis, emergency numbers, medical assistance, a language section, insider tips, etc. Anything that attendees from outside Utrecht/NL will find useful before and during their stay.

We are looking for one suitable candidate to write this section and the next, in exchange of free attendance at the conference and the dinners.

Contact us for more info (and convince us why you’re the ideal person for this task).

Things to see

Would you like to write this section?

We are looking for a local colleague with good writing skills to write this section.

You’ll need to research and write about the most well-known and some of the less obvious sights, some shopping tips, unique experiences, and so on.  Most attendees from outside Utrcht/NL will most probably spend at least a couple of extra days in Amsterdam and/or elsewhere in the country, so some tips for day trips are also welcome.

We are looking for one suitable candidate to write this section and the previous one, in exchange of free attendance at the conference and the dinners.

Ideally you could also help organising walking tours / boat rides / day trips.
