If you wish to fly from a city or region not listed above, you may be better off flying to a city near Bologna and catch an onward train than chaning planes somewhere.

Florence, Verona, Venice, Milan, and even Rome are well connected by train to Bologna.

Flying to Florence is a useful option from Zürich and Geneva.  Take a bus from the airport to the train station, from where it’s a 35-minute ride to Bologna.

Milano has two airports. Linate has useful direct flights from Luxembourg and Stockholm.  A combination of bus and train gets you to Bologna in 1:51.

Milano Malpensa is a major transcontinental hub, with direct flights from a wide range of cities, including Toronto, Beijing, Tokyo, Cairo, Lagos, Mumbai, Miami, Minsk, São Paulo, Beirut, St Petersburg, and many others.  Take a train to Milano Centrale, then a connecting train to Bologna, with a total travel time of 1:43.

Flying to Rome Fiumicino could be a good option from cities such as Buenos Aires, Montréal, Los Angeles, Rio de Janeiro, Philadelphia, Split, Atlanta, Kuwait, Oslo, and many others.   Take a train from the airport to Roma Termini station, then a connection train to Bologna. The journey takes around 3 hours, depending on the time of the day.

Other international airports not too far from Bologna include Pisa and Rimini.
