Walking tours

No trip to Budapest is complete without seeing some of the city’s iconic landmarks – or hidden gems.  Pick your choice:

BP17 Translation Conference gastro walk
This is a great introduction to the city if you arrive early for the conference.  The guide picks you up at the conference hotel Wednesday afternoon, and takes you to the central market hall next to the river.  You’ll walk around the market, tasting some of the food available there. You’ll get to eat genuine Hungarian gulyás (which is actually a thick soup) at a nearby restaurant, get a taste of pálinka, eat home-made dumplings elsewhere, and finish it off with three different glasses of wine.   The tour ends up in Dob utca around 18:30, in the heart of the 7th district, the party epicenter of Budapest. This tour will cost 45€ + VAT if applicable.
BP17 Translation Conference - evening walk
The tour meets at Deák tér, a centrally located transport hub – it’s 4 metro stops from the conference hotel, or a 10-minute walk from where the previous gastronomical tour ends.  You’ll get to walk in the northern part of the downtown area, built in the second half of the 19th century.  After seeing the Basilica, you’ll explore Budapest’s most beautiful public park, Szabadság tér, where every surrounding building has been a witness to history.  After this you’ll get to see the majestic Parliament building from behind.  From here you’ll walk along the river downstream until you reach the pier for an evening boat ride.  The guide leaves you here, but your ticket includes a one-hour boat ride (starting at 21:15), and you’ll get to see Budapest’s iconic landmarks in floodlight.  This tour will cost 28€ + VAT if applicable.
BP17 Translation Conference absolute walk
This is a great introduction to the city for first time visitors.   The guide picks you up from the hotel, and starts the tour at Heroes’ Square, giving you a quick overview of 11 centuries of national history.  From here you’ll the continent’s first underground line to the downtown area where you’ll walk mostly on pedestrian streets.  After crossing the Danube on the Chain Bridge, you’ll walk in the Buda Castle area.       The tour includes a short break to stock up on strudels and coffee.  The tour ends around 12:30 at Fisherman’s Bastion in the castle.  After this you can explore the castle on your own, or you’ll have plenty of time to make it back to the hotel for an afternoon masterclass.  This tour will cost 20€ + VAT if applicable.
BP17 Translation Conference hidden walk
The guide picks you up from the hotel, or you can join the group at Astoria metro stop near the Synagogue (photo). This tour takes you along the side streets of the 7th district, the former Jewish district, now the party hub of Budapest, as well as the central parts of neighbouring 8th district, which offers some unexpected gems of hidden squares and grandiose palaces.   The tour includes a stop where you can taste ‘flódni’, a delicious Jewish-Hungarian cake, and get your refill of coffee.   The tour ends around 17:30 at Kálvin tér.   From here you can continue exploring the city independently.  The welcome dinner starts at 19:30 just off Deák tér.  (A map will be available soon to get you familiarized with all these street names.)   This tour will cost 23€ + VAT if applicable.
